I admit that I had this tried in the first place as well.  I can confirm
that

override_dh_auto_install
	$(MAKE) DESTDIR=debian/altree install

worked (please note that the '/usr' at the end needs to be dropped).

... but unneeded if you use the solution above.  Vincent, just do
whatever you prefer and once you are at it please clarify the suspicious
Conflicts/Replaces/Provides of not existing packages.
