I admit it was ages ago when I was doing some ANSI C programming but I
could imagine that checking how heavily dmalloc is used and replace it
by some macros masquerading its syntax to default malloc could possibly
do the trick.  Contacting upstream in advance to see what they could
do is surely the better approach and my suggestion would only be a last
fallback if it is worth spending the time into it.

Alternatively it might help to check whether the dbmalloc.* files of
mpatrol exclusively might do the trick (if these are not just copies of
the affected dbmalloc and mpatrol was removed for this actual reason).

Good luck.  I had recently also the experience that upstreams of
projects not touched for >= 3 years were quite resoponsive.
