There is no need to write a preinstall script. Please review
NEWS.Debian
https://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/debian-med/trunk/packages/dcmtk/trunk/debian/NEWS.Debian?view=markup
and commit changes you might consider helpful right to SVN. BTW,
anybody else at some point in time has written the first preinstall
script ...

It would have been a good idea to document this at some point in
time.

I somehow assumed that I would have told you when we met at a
MiniDebConf. Just for the record: I have zero education in medical
imaging, have never dealt with any DICOM file. I do not have any good
reason to deal with medical imaging packages except that I feel
responsible for the whole Debian Med scope and try to fix urgent issues
with my Debian packaging competence. I think I have made clear in the
past that your quitting from the team has created a gap regarding
competence in medical imaging and I'm seriously concerned that we do not
manage the workload properly if you fully stop your commitment here.
Kind regards
Andreas.
