Thanks for your message and offer. In the end, I was informed of another
way to unblock testing migration and so decided not to backport the
changes here.

I'm sure upstream would appreciate your testing of their development
version, though. It seems they do not have access to a mips machine and
their ticket was still open the last time I checked.
