Well, I had a stab a this a few days ago, the complications are: 

 - no vtk6 
 - The Qt GUI requires that vtk is compiled with Qt support, 
   but it uses QT4 and vtk6 is build against QT5

At this point I gave up, and looked at the project activity: The
developers list has below one mail a month, in the last three years and
it's mostly unanswered questions, and the user list is likewise very
low traffic and there are two mail that spell out the missing VTK6
support.

> short time frame I'd be fine with removing it.
I pass on this one. The project is hosted by Kitware, and somehow I
suspect that they would continue maintaining it if there was serious
interest.
