 From one of the Ubuntu autopkgtest logs [1]:

autopkgtest [20:27:02]: test run-unit-test: [-----------------------
cp: -r not specified; omitting directory 
'/usr/share/doc/r-cran-epi/examples/vignettes'

I think Matthias missed a '-r' from his patch, but you have a '-a' there 
[2], so it should be fine.
