As far as I understand java, I already tried that. One can give 
additional paths to the java executable via the -cp parameter. That is 
what I did with the command given, above. Trying the shell variable 
CLASSPATH does not lead to any improvement either.

That is whats bugging me. There is a XMLConstants in the 
batik-constants.jar. However, java just decides not to load it even 
though compilation was fine.
