I took the freedom to realise my suggestion to use automake.  The
advantage is that you get multiarch for free and the build system is
somehow "convenient" in terms of not needing any override. 

I admit I'm not fully happy with my work since I'm also not an automake
adept and thus the manpage is not part of the Makefile.am installation
and the check is also not as elegant as I would prefer it to be.

However, there is also pkg-config which might be convenient in some
situations.  Would you mind integrating my patch upstream before I
upload?  Feel free to enhance it - I'm not really proud about that
code ...
