Package: emboss
Severity: wishlist

Hello everybody,

In 2008, for the visualisation of DNA sequence chromatograms generated
by Applied Biosystems machines and their successors, I created files
declaring media types for the mailcap and FreeDesktop systems. Due to
my incomplete undertanding at that time, I used standard tree media
types, such as `application/vnd.appliedbiosystems.abif` without making
sure they are declared.

In principle, it would be better to either have the maker company to
declare chromatogram files' media types and their magic numbers, or
empower one of us (any volunteer?) to do so. Then we could propagate
them in the "file" and "shared-mime-info" databases, which would
increase the chance that the media types are used when the files
are served on the Web or sent by email.

Thus, I open this bug as a reminder.

Have a nice day,

Charles
