I was expecting something along those lines indeed. TBH I'm expecting
the person who submitted #1076725 and #1076726 to work on that,
especially as I don't own any hardware d-i images could target using
those packages.

No, that one would be straight ath9k on x86, so neither of those
packages should be required. The first target that comes to mind is
https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Thinkpad/X13s and other
similar WoA laptops/tablets.
