Could you provide the full backtrace ?
I cannot reproduce here (even if I have also an x86 CPU) with
python-matplotlib 0.99.1.2-3.

Could you try:
sudo update-alternatives --auto liblapack.so.3gf 
sudo update-alternatives --auto libblas.so.3gf 

You might have some bad dependencies.
