Bug#571572: Revert to gcc-4.3 with -O3?

I am open. However, I am not planning to implement your suggestion
because other might felt into this bug ;)

I would like to do something like:
if GCCversion == 4.3 && arch=*amd64
CFLAGS=-O2
else
CFLAGS=-O3
endif

However, I don't know if there is a clean way to detect the gcc
version ?!
