In the R program, multiplication of matrices fails and leads to program
termination.  Debugging suggests that this is related to the library libblas3gf

Program received signal SIGILL, Illegal instruction.
0xb534f679 in atl_f77wrap_dgemm_ () from /usr/lib/libblas.so.3gf

This is also produced when trying use the plot function in octave
