If I run octave, and then type the following code I got:
octave:1> a=rand(3,3)
a =

   0.417048   0.326002   0.482507
   0.303552   0.465023   0.841328
   0.012535   0.586797   0.141047

octave:2> eig(a)
panic: Illegal instruction -- stopping myself...
attempting to save variables to `octave-core'...
save to `octave-core' complete
Illegal instruction

If I run scilab I got as descibed in
