Although I installed the packages, due to conflicts between
libatlas3gf-sse2 and libblas3 (which I was trying to resolve by installing
a customized libatlas3), the packages were not configured (and I haven't
fixed it yet, see above).

I assumed that these were files-only packages with no significant
postinst configuration, but looking at the scripts, there are some
alternatives that may have been missing.

I just did a "dpkg --configure -a", removed the symlinks I added, and
the rebuild ran properly.

If so, apologies for the false alarm.
