running the following in some X terminal:
unset DISPLAY
echo 'plot sin(x); exit' | gnuplot -persist
this was triggered by the http://stackoverflow.com/a/16130236/841108 answer
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
Type the two commands:
unset DISPLAY
echo 'plot sin(x); exit' | gnuplot -persist
in some X11 terminal under XFCE or Gnome session
* What was the outcome of this action?
A core dump with SIGSEGV from gnuplot
* What outcome did you expect instead?
At least a fatal error message, and preferably a recoverable error message.
