thanks for the fast response.

your problems with the software dependencies sounds... quite difficult and
complex. Unfortunately I don't have time to help with debugging/fixing the
spyder package in debian-testing.

I decided to reinstall debian with the "stable" version (aka "jessie"). I
installed spyder and it worked right away! debian-stable has very
recent/up-to-date software packages (compared to centos 6/7) and so I am
happy with debian-stable and the version of
spyder/ipython/matplotlib/numpy/python.

p.s. there is a spyder package that is proprietary and always seems to
"just work" by Continuum at: https://www.continuum.io/downloads
