Now I can reproduce it as well. Probably my mirror was a little bit
behind at the time I initially tried it. The problem is
introduced with r-base-dev/r-base-core 3.2.5.20160429-1, building in sid
with the version from testing (3.2.5-1) works fine.

I just filed a bug against r-base-dev.
