Thanks Aaron, I'm aware of the problem, in fact it's Bug#860599. 
OpenMPI provides mpi-fort.pc and mumps is tuned to use it. 
Unfortunately mpich doesn't provide it, and mpich is the default MPI on
m68k (notice also that sh4 has the same problem).

Rather than merging this bug into #860599, I'll keep them separate in
case people want to discuss or make a patch for mumps to not require
mpi-fort.pc.

But I think a tidier solution is to construct an mpi-fort.pc for mpich.
  (or perhaps as you suggest, using mpifort itself is the better
solution)
