Belay that.  metis has a non-free licence, so we can't build against it
without relegating mumps to contrib instead of the main archive.

It'll be easy for you to activate metis support yourself with a local
build.  For instance you could grab the experimental branch from the
debian git repo 
https://anonscm.debian.org/git/debian-science/packages/mumps.git
metis support was temporarily in place at commit
8d3d2aceffe4f90b35957cb98ace1c4370a69456
