Maybe another option would be

     4) See whether it is possible to rip out GTK from rasmol entirely

I don't think it was always a GTK application, but a native XWindows app
previously. If that is feasible at all, it might remove some features
that users rely on, but there is a chance this would be easier than 1)
or 2).
