I don't know, I didn't use freecad for a few weeks, there was probably an
update in X libraries.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

try to launch freecad, from Gnome or from the command line

   * What was the outcome of this action?

nothing in the Gnome case, and the following message in the
command line case:
