Well, almost 2 years ago this has been commited upstream [1] and the
bug tagged accordingly.  I always hoped to see some more upstream
activity and a new upstream release containing the patch.   

However, this seems not to happen anymore and perhaps you are right.
I'll prepare the patch and a new upload.
