In the end, I filed a GH issue [1] with the PyPI version of the package,
as I believe that this is best worked out between the two upstreams.
There's no benefit for us being the intermediary.

As to the problem itself, my immediate fix will be to patch smvutil to
include commonutil, for the following reasons:

  1. That's what svmutil does, internally - it pulls * from the
     communutil namespace to the svmutil namespace

  2. commonutils is mentioned only in passing in the docs, so I
     don't believe that many people will be depending on it.
