It seems that this bug (whatever it is) is fixed upstream in 7.2.20

I did a quick and dirty update to 7.2.20 at

  https://salsa.debian.org/bremner/ipe

It's probably not suitable for upload since I just dropped the cross
building patch, lacking the patience for rebasing it at the moment.

Of course feel free to use my version as a starting point, or not.
