On declaring hard dependency for apertium (>= 3.7) in d/control it will migrate with, or before apertium 3.7, solving the problem.
I tried to modify the autopkgtests to ignore spacing for now, since fundamentally the translation is correct, and opened an MR here[1]

If you could take a look and give a green signal, I'll happily upload this package.
