The simulator is excessively slow, investigating I found it is build in debug mode instead of release.
The fix is as simple as running the following :

sed -e 's/-DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Debug/-DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release/g' -i debian/rules
