I can confirm this happens on sbuild for me as well. Interestingly, 
tests pass when building it on VM with unstable (without sbuild). I 
assume this might be due to some code trying to write to $HOME, or 
possibly attempt network access, but not sure if out-of-the-box sbuild 
prevents that.
