Versions of packages gnuplot depends on:
ii gnuplot-qt [gnuplot-x11] 6.0.2+dfsg1-1

gnuplot recommends no packages.

Versions of packages gnuplot suggests:
pn gnuplot-doc <none>

-- no debconf information

Digging in the package repositories I found gnuplot-qt. Installing it replaced gnuplot-x11 and now all works fine.
