It's quite possible the bug is in openmpi, not pmix itself.
For instance mpich isn't triggering the error in the mpi4py tests
cf. https://tests.reproducible-builds.org/debian/rb-pkg/unstable/armhf/mpi4py.html

There was a patch in openmpi upstream which sounds related,

although it's already applied in debian's current openmpi v5 source
