Unfortunately yes.

This is probably the most sensible approach.  Do you volunteer for this?
If not it might be probably me to sort out the mess I've created.

No, there is no need to push anything.  I was simply hoping that last
upstream could solve some problems.  I should have done this in a
separate branch.  In Debian Science team we are a bit sloppy with this
by simply using master branch ... which fires back in cases like this.
