I re-built linbox (our sid-sage version) locally, installed it, and the "illegal instruction" errors went away. I did not upload this, because it does not really fix the problem - we need to disable these types of optimisations in debian/rules *even if the build machine supports the instruction extension*. But I thought I'd report this here anyways, just to let you guys know it works.
