Another example is the FSF (https://www.fsf.org/patrons), which actually
follows the alternative approach of never deleting old sponsors (they
call them "patrons"), but just shifting them out to historical donors
pages.
I like this more than just removing names, but YMMV.
Other than that, I agree with you (and Luca) that this approach would be
best. FWIW I was under the impression that we didn't have any real
disagreement on the general approach of acknowledging yearly donation
and phase them out, we just don't have anyone who volunteered to
implement it... (Then we can discuss^W bikeshed over thresholds for
being platinum/gold/monopoly-coins/pizzas, but that's just a detail,
really.)
