Following an upgrade of libxslt1.1, the following XSL:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
  <xsl:param name="foo" select="'abc'"/>  
  <xsl:template match="*[@bar=$foo]"/>  
</xsl:stylesheet>

gives the following error:
XPath error : Undefined variable
compilation error: file /tmp/bar.xsl line 4 element template
Failed to compile predicate
