 Boeri Moscato d'Asti DOCG 2010 Usual $38 Now $32/bt
One of the finest moscato d'asti and we dare say so because we have
sold lots of this wine and many are repeat orders. Why ? Simply
because this wine is not cloying and has good underlying acidity,
freshness and simply delicious. Giorgio Boeri says the essence is in
determining when is the best time to harvest the fruit - at the right
balance of sugar and acidity and taking on the fermentation process
with lightning speed to prevent oxidation and maintaining maximum
freshness. Sounds easy but many Piedmontese producers failed to
observe these steps as they focus more time and effort in their other
higher value products such as barolo. Also at Costiglione d'Asti, that
same piece of vineyard (Bricco Quaglia) have always produced high
quality moscato and for 3 generations now, nothing have changed.

 Scarpa Barbera d'Asti "I Bricchi" 2001 Usual $65 Now $58/bt
35 year old vines. Vineyard Bogliona 100% clay, bordering on the
communes of Castelrocchero, Montabone, Acqui Terme. 400 m asl. 14.5%
alc. 12 mths ageing in slovenian oak casks. Approachable in the 3rd
year, excellent in the 5th. Intense clear ruby red with orange tints.
Persistent bouquet of wild morello and violet, slight hint of
liquorice and vanilla. Austere, velvety, harmonious, elegant and yet
powerful after the 4th year.

Boeri Barbera d'Asti Superiore "Martinette" 2005 Usual $42 Now $35/bt
We tasted this barbera a few months ago and retasted it during
Vinitaly in Verona 2 weeks ago and it confirms our initial feel about
this wine...great value ! The nose is fruity and spicy and on the
palate, it has fullness and supple texture and the finishing is long
and convincing. This 2005 Barbera Martinette is simply great value .

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2003 WA 91 pts Usual $75 Now
$68/bt
Readers should make a point to should check out the estate€™s 2003
Barbaresco as this year€™s release is off the charts. The
single-vineyard Riservas will not be produced in 2003 and this wine
clearly benefits from the addition of that fruit. It is an unusually
rich and expansive wine for this estate, packed with heady sensations
of spices, licorice and menthol that are followed by deep layers of
super-ripe fruit that fill out the wine€™s frame with excellent
concentration and fleshiness, closing with beautifully well-integrated
tannins that are the exception rather than the rule in 2003.
Atypically large-scaled and ample for a Barbaresco from this estate,
it is also the finest normale the winery has released in many a year.
Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018.

Terredavino Barolo DOCG 2006 Usual $65 Now $48/bt
Barolo is a great red wine with a venerable history, whose qualities
were prized by the famous statesman Camillo Benso, Conte di Cavour. It
is produced exclusively from the nebbiolo grape. The vineyards that
yielded this particular Barolo lie in the best viticultural zones of
the Grinzane Cavour, La Morra, and Castiglione Falletto communes, all
in the province of Cuneo. Following a traditional fermentation and
maceration, this Barolo matures for 2 years in large oak botti, where
it develops the tannins and extractive compounds that will give it
superb structure and enable it to age for many years. Garnet-edged
rich ruby red. Pleasurable and generous on the nose with evolved
bouquet of violets and dried rose petals. Dry on palate, full-bodied
and robust. Smooth and harmonious.

Canalicchio di Soprano Brunello di Montalcino 2001 WA 91 pts Usual
$110 Now $85/bt
This family-run estate makes an excellent Brunello from its 15
hectares of vineyards in the Canalicchio zone of Montalcino. I
recently had the opportunity to taste several vintages of the
Brunello, which was a great opportunity to assess recent vintages as
well as glean some insights into how the wine ages. From vintage to
vintage the wine showed its characteristic notes of scorched earth and
ripe dark fruit. With a few years of bottle age the wines often begin
to display attractive, heady white truffle overtones. The house favors
cask-aging for its Brunello and the wines are made in a fairly
traditional style. The medium- to full-bodied 2001 Brunello di
Montalcino is rich, plump, and bursting with flavor, showing subtle,
delicately woven notes of earthiness, tobacco, smoke, minerals and
plenty of dark cherry fruit supported by firm yet fine tannins. It is
sure to improve with a few years of cellaring but it is quite
impressive even today. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021.

Castellare di Tonda Chianti (Unfiltered) (Sangiovese 90% & 5%
Ciliegiolo ">Now $29/bt
Our best selling basic Chianti is now better than ever. The 2007
vintage is a blend of 90% sangiovese, 5% ciliegiolo and 5% petit
verdot. Aged 6 months in glass-lined cement tank, this wine is
aristocratic (thanks to Petit Verdot) yet retaining it's classic
style. Ripe, spicy, menthol, captivating morello cherry on the nose,
good weight on the palate, bitter-sweet red fruits fills the mouth
with fine texture and soft tannins. Simple luxury - excellent choice
for everyday drinking. Those who have bought this wine before knows
how well the wine gets (taste) the next day when high quality
sangiovese is given the chance to breathe, blossom and express it's
unique characteristics.

Collosorbo Rosso di Montalcino 2005 Usual $55 Now $39/bt
An impressive Rosso di Montalcino, it exhibits an opaque ruby/purple
color along with a big front end, which narrows out in the mouth.
Nevertheless, it is a very good, chunky, structured wine meant to
provide immediate joy.

 Melini Chianti Classico Riserva €œLa Selvanella€ 2003 €“ 3
Biccherie Gambero Rosso Usual $65 Now $48/bt
The La Selvanella vineyard is spectacular. A single 48 hectare plot at
an altitude of 450-500 metres on the top of hill overlooking the
Lucarelli area halfway between Panzano and Volpaia. This plot is
managed to a rigorously modern approach, with more than 5,000 plants
per hectare producing around one kilogram of fruit per plant. The wine
is matured in large 50-hectolitre barrels to give a Chianti Classico
of enormous character that is concentrated without being heavy or
jammy, even in torrid vintage like 2003. Since 1969, the name of La
Selvanella has appeared on this wine that is emblematic for it€™s
typical style.

Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova Brunello di Montalcino 2003 WS 92 pts
Usual $135 Now $115/bt
Intense aromas of blackberry, licorice and black cherry. Full-bodied,
with fine tannins and a chewy finish. Has impressive structure for the
vintage. Very well-made.

La Rasina Brunello di Montalcino 2003 WA 90 pts Usual $95 Now $80/bt
High-toned aromatics lead to a lush expression of dark cherries, sweet
toasted oak, mint, tobacco and leather in the 2003 Brunello di
Montalcino. This modern, full-bodied wine doesn€™t look to be
especially long-lived but it does offer highly pleasurable drinking in
an immediate, pleasing style. The wine should be even better in
another year or so, once the tannins have settled down a bit.
Anticipated maturity: 2009-2017. Readers who enjoy the
richly-textured, sumptuous side of Brunello will want to check out La
Rasina€™s 2003 Brunellos.

San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Le Luc(c)re 2003 Usual $125 Now
$105/bt
This brunello is pure and clean with very intense red / blackberry
bouquet and great inner perfume with hard edges on the palate. Superb.
Le Lucere is made from the property€™s oldest Sangiovese plants and
aged in a combination of cask and smaller French oak barrels. The
Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere is an intense, full-bodied wine
packed with ripe, dark fruit. There is plenty of stuffing here.

Salvioni Brunello di Montalcino 2001 WA 95 pts Usual $230 Now $195/bt
(last 2bts avail)
Powerful and authoritative, Salvioni€™s deeply-colored 2001 Brunello
di Montalcino is unquestionably one of the vintage€™s top wines. It
displays a tightly wound core of sweet dark fruit, marrying notable
concentration with classic structure on a frame of great expansiveness
and length. The 2001 Brunello saw a full four years of cask,
considered long by today€™s standards, yet it boasts incredible
freshness, richness and vibrancy. This magical, unique Brunello of
exquisite pedigree will be at its best in another few years and it
should offer rewarding drinking to at least age 20. A great effort.
Anticipated maturity: 2008-2021.

Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino 2003 WA 93 pts Usual $155 Now $128/bt
Fuligni€™s gorgeous 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is unquestionably
one of the stars of the vintage. Made in a style that captures
elements of both traditional and modern styles, it presents a very
attractive array of ripe red fruits, smoke, tar and tobacco and
toasted oak on a firm, classically-built frame. While it isn€™t
quite as fresh as some of the other Brunellos from this part of the
zone, its seamless texture and silky tannins make for a
beautifully-balanced wine to enjoy now and over the next dozen years
or so. This is just about as good as it gets in the tricky 2003
vintage.

Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 2005 WA 93 pts Usual $320 Now $280/bt
The 2005 Sassicaia is another strong effort from Tenuta San Guido.
Medium in body, it reveals an understated, delicate expression of
smoke, herbs, tobacco and sweet dark fruit. The wine possesses
compelling harmony and a gorgeous sense of inner perfume that flows
from start to finish. This is an outstanding showing in a very
challenging vintage. Sassicaia is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with a
small amount of Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025

Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto 2000 WA 90 pts Usual $115 Now $95/bt
Seductive and refined. Subtle aromas of currants, berries and leaves,
with hints of cream. Medium- to full-bodied, with polished tannins and
a long, caressing finish. A new wine from the makers of Sassicaia.
Best after 2003

Tenute Galtarossa Valpolicella "Corte Colombara" Classico Superiore
2004 Usual $58 Now $45/bt
This wine in actual fact could be classified as €œRipasso€ -
Variety: Corina and Rodinella from the prestigious communes of San
Pietro in Cariano and Negrar in Vapolicella. Hand harvested and part
of the fruit is stored for a short period for drying while the rest
goes straight into cold maceration for 48 hours followed by
fermentation for about 12 days in vinificators. In November, the dried
grapes are added to this wine which, with a second fermentation, is
enriched with further polyphenolic and aromatic components and takes
on it own unique character. The wine then matures in wooden cash of
different size and flavours for about a year and rest in bottle for
another 6 months before release into the market. By law
€œsuperiore€ dictates a higher alcohol content achieved through
riper grapes and €œclassico€ means the grapes must be from the
original classified zone of Vapolicella in Veneto.

Campagnola Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Centenario 2005 WS 88

Tasted this last week, this wine have evolved very nicely€ to my
pleasant surprise. Good fruitiness with underlying fresh
acidity..great finish. As far as the whites are concerned, we are
particularly impressed by the Sauvignon Perticato II Quadri , which
underwent cold maceration on the skins and then aged in stainless
steel vats. It is a fresh, balanced, no-nonsense wine with seductively
well-defined fruit and citrus notes dominating the palate, and a
lively mineral sensation as a finishing touch.
