epubcheck refuses to check files not named *.epub even if they are EPUB:

pabs at chianamo ~ $ file foo*
foo:      EPUB document
foo.epub: EPUB document
pabs at chianamo ~ $ file --mime foo*
foo:      application/epub+zip; charset=binary
foo.epub: application/epub+zip; charset=binary
pabs at chianamo ~ $ epubcheck foo
Mode required for non-epub files. Default version is 3.0.
epubcheck completed
pabs at chianamo ~ $ epubcheck foo.epub
