I suspected that the other files were project configuration files
which were not necessarily to be removed (even if these are in a
binary format, which is common on MS-Windows, and even if I did not
make use of these files).

Well spotted, however it could be a public domain implementation of
getopt as found in a number of places :

although it might be difficult to establish it with certainty.
