I had a look into the said issue but failed with

...
No package 'vte' found
Package vte was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `vte.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'vte' found
...

When looking at the upstream page I'm not very optimistic that we'll get
help from this side.  However, rasmol is one of the higher popcon packages
in Debian Science (271 active users) and I think it is worth doing some
effort to port it to recent development tools.  Any volunteer?
