I was able to reproduce this in ase-gui. The program did continue to
run after the exception, and I was able to export in other formats,
but no file was created when attempting to export PNG.

Yes, the exported PNG does have a rather low resolution, even in
3.14.1.  Exporting via POVRAY (Tools / Render Scene...) does produce
nicer results.
