After some tests, I believe the most probably reason for the failure I
got was lack of disk space. Sorry for the false positive, I usually
measure how much disk space is required and only try in a machine
which has enough. Because this was a new upstream release, I was still
using the disk estimation from the previous version.

I think there is still a problem here: Why is there not any "disk full"
message anywhere? Why just "ld returned 1 exit status"? Should not
also say the reason, like any other compiler usually does?

Perhaps this should be reassigned to whatever package contains the
"mpicxx.openmpi" command?
