Dear Student,
Are you interested in studying Bioinformatics at the Master of Science
level?
At SLU we offer a course package in Bioinformatics (30 ECTS, 1 semester)
including two courses, Genome Analysis and Bioinformatics. This can then be
followed by a 30ECTS thesis project, with which you will earn an 1-year MS
in Bioinformatics. Alternatively, you can take additional elective courses
and/or a more extensive thesis project, and earn a 2-year (120 ECTS) MS.
SLU embraces the Agtech revolution. We have invested significantly in
sequencing and high-performance computing. We are building up our
metagenomics, transcriptomics, structural biology, and artificial
intelligence. But you will find experts in all fields of agriculture, for
example animal, crop, and soil sciences as well as virology, statistics,
and molecular biology, in whose labs you can do your thesis research. Our
pedagogical development goes hand in hand with research. We have invested
in new modules on metagenomics, programming, and Deep Learning, and new
teaching techniques including flipped and spaced-repetition learning and
virtualized labs.
Demand for bioinformaticians is set to grow for years to come.
Bioinformaticians are central in laboratory development, playing a pivotal
role in advancing our understanding of complex biological data. Career
paths for graduates of the program include roles in academia, research
institutes, government agencies, and industry (such as pharmaceuticals,
biotechnology, or healthcare).
Bioinformatics at SLU differs from elsewhere in a few key ways. At SLU you
will find that sustainability is front and center. Many of our research
projects are oriented towards climate remediation and resilience. We also
have considerable international engagement, and in particular collaborate
with emerging democracies and countries at the front lines of climate
change, to attain the UN sustainable development goals.

We look forward to reading your application.
