The way you reverted now is arguably not better.

Creating a commit with a tag for -1.2 and "git merge" that into master 
would be the proper git way.

Your personal preference of keeping a linear git history is not the git 
way of working, just like manual merging of NMUs without commit.

In my book it is not ok when you show up in random teams and impose your 
personal opinions on the team repositories.

There were no troubles before you showed up.

If a maintainer prefers to do manual merging of an NMU, then that's ok.

Michael has been the sole person maintaining this package for the past 
10 years, it is not ok that you show up and lecture the one person who 
has done all the work on the package how you want to have things done.

The main effect of such behaviour is to frustrate maintainers and 
discourage team maintainance.
