[Fingerforce-devel] Bug#496530: libfprint0: unable to read from AES 2501 device as normal user

Package: libfprint0
Version: 20080202-3
Severity: normal

My Lenovo 3000 N200 laptop is equipped with and AES 2501 fingerprint
reader. I found out on the fprint website that this device is supported
so I gave it a try.

But, even if in /etc/udev/rules.d/z60_libfprint0.rules there's a specific
line for this device, fprint-demo says it cannot read from it ("Status: can't
open device"). If I run as root, it works without any problem. My user is in
the "plugdev" group, and the udev rule says:

# Device aes2501
ATTRS{idVendor}=="08ff", ATTRS{idProduct}=="2580", MODE="0664", GROUP="plugdev"

Also if I try to run pam_fprint_enroll as normal user:

Found device claimed by AuthenTec AES2501 driver
aes2501:error [dev_init] could not claim interface 0
fp:error [fp_dev_open] device initialisation failed, driver=aes2501
Could not open device.

Also here root can read from the device w/o any problem.

Best,
Steko
