I have installed thinkfinger an used this way to install it:

I configured it to work with root, my login (chris). I also configured it to work with 
gnome-screensaver. Right now, the problem I have is it will only work occasionally. It 
works everytime with gdm, but it will only work sometimes with gksu and sometimes with 
gnome-screensaver.

With gksu, if I try it a couple of times, it will succeed. With gnome-screensaver, it 
generally will work if I cancell and try again. However, with gnome-screensaver, if I 
try to use the password aftwr thinkfinger, it will have a seemingly infinate loop to 
try to authenticate.

Recently, when I tried gksu with synaptic, I got this message:

Failed to run /usr/sbin/synaptic as user root.

Failed to communicate with gksu-run-helper.

It will almost never work the first time, but it will generally work a after a few 
tries.
