Yes, in the schematic there is a reference to RTL8201CP which is
manufactured by Realtek and described here,

That was an answer, thanks! I'll look closer at that design at some
later point if noone beats me to it. At least doesn't seem to be
USB-based like the Raspberry Pi.

I find this to be an important point for freedombox since running a
freedombox without good networking would be quite useless.
