Thank you both for your suggestions!

I've used both:
I've created the 'heavy' mark to mark these tests.
And I've extended the autoskipping mechanism of functional tests to also
treat the heavy ones.
Then I've borrowed the EXTENDED_TESTING variable to enable both at once.

I'm planning to perhaps create email tests requiring a client like swaks to
be installed.
I might use another mark for them, also handled by the EXTENDED_TESTING
variable.
Or call them functional and include swaks among the dependencies for the
functional tests.
