When FreedomBox package is installed using Debian installer or using
apt, these containers are not pulled in. The podman package is also not
installed by default. This is also true for all the FreedomBox images
built by FreedomBox team. There are no software bits outside of official
Debian (except for that one u-boot patch for Olimex Pioneer Ethernet
issue which we still carry).
To install container based "apps", each user will have to visit the
FreedomBox web UI, read the warnings about containers, and request
installation. Then, podman (from Debian) and the containers (from
upstream project) are downloaded and installed. In effect, FreedomBox is
shipping some install scripts for installing these container based apps.
I believe, this is similar to how Firefox, flatpak, or GNOME Software
install software from outside of Debian.
