Don't know if I can help you but there are package out there which are
especially targetted to send SMS via cell phones:

linuxsms - Cool script in Perl to send SMS messages to GSM phones
sms-pl - Send SMs via Polish GSM operators
smsclient - A program for sending short messages (SM / SMS)
smssend - Utility to send SMS messages to GSM mobile phones
smstools - SMS Server Tools for GSM modems

You should have a look at these.
