FWIW -- I just tried in a VM which is started in a VirtualBox via ssh
tunneling, under a VNC session... unfortunately could not have any 3D
acceleration in such an obscure setup but caret5 did start normally
(besides complaining that opengl is N/A and VM should enable it but no
complaints about GLX extension itself -- it should be available with
software rendering), loaded sample sphere .spec with comes with
caret-data and navigated it no problem.
