eh, I wish we upgraded it to something more recent (like debian buster
10.0) but previous attempts were not finalized... note that you
can "as easily" use any other debian VM image you could trust (since
AFAIK there are no official ones) or install Debian "yourself" fully.
It is not that bad actually. This walkthrough seems to be quite good:

That would allow you to size your VM harddrive more appropriately etc.
After you install it, just install neurodeban and neurodebian-desktop
packages and you would get quite close to the VM setup

:-( "recovering journal" suggests that it was not shut down "properly"
but it seems has recovered ok and I would have expected it to boot...

sorry - no immediate ideas. Also that 8.0.0 jessie is quite old by now
and even LTS ended for it: https://wiki.debian.org/LTS just a few days
ago.
